Hans Memling. The Painter of the Other Renaissance
The Last Judgement by Hans Memling is one of the most precious works of West European painting in Polish collections. The masterpiece owes its fame to both, its artistic rank and its turbulent history. Hans Memling (c. 1435-1494) is one of the most celebrated European painters of the 15th century. Little is known about his early life and artistic education. As an adult he came to Bruges where he lived till the end of his days. During the thirty years or so of his activity in Bruges, Memling became highly respected, painting mainly portraits and personal devotion images commissioned by private patrons. And this is how his triptych The Last Judgement was created - one of Memling's greatest works. The painting is in the National Museum in Gdańsk. The graphic novel „Hans Memling. The Painter of the Other Renaissance” was selected in the nationwide competition organised by The Joseph Conrad Voivodeship and City Public Library in Gdańsk to celebrate the Hans Memling Anniversary. Its author, Łukasz Pawlak (1982) has graduated from the Graphic Design Faculty of the Fine Arts Academy in Łódź. He has been making comic strips for as long as he can remember. ISBN: 978-83-89285-08-9, First Edition, Gdańsk 2018, 50 pages.
